If you have downloaded the latest release of MEPworx using Edge, Internet Explorer or Firefox, you may see that the expected download is named:
“Unconfirmed 37845.crdownload” where 37845 can be any random number.
Attempting to install by double clicking on the downloaded file will prompt the following question:
The list of programs displayed is not usually helpful and does not offer any alternative to the programs in the displayed list.
The reason that Microsoft Windows does not know what to do with the file is because the Internet navigator has removed the file extension “.exe” during the download. This file extension indicates what type of file it is and enables specific actions to take place. This happens for all versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Edge. If it happens to you and you are using a different Internet browser, please let me know so I can update this blog.
The solution is simple, just use Windows File Explorer and check that the file size is just under half Gigabyte in size, then rename the “Unconfirmed xxxxx.crdownload” file so it becomes “MEPworx 2024.exe” (don’t forget the full stop before the exe). These three letter file extensions tell MS Windows what program it needs to use to open a file or run an Application.
As a final caveat, don’t just double click on the renamed file, use the Right Click on the file and select “Run as administrator”, regardless of the permissions you believe you have. Installing software without appropriate permissions may result in software libraries (DLL’s) not being installed or registered.
Thank you for reading. Let me know if this happens using alternative browsers.
