For several versions now Revit has had the ability to share models as read only viewable files. These files can be viewed in any modern Web browser and if the recipient has an Autodesk account, can be marked up, measured and commented on with the notes being visible to the original model author.
Currently only 3D views can be shared. To share a model, the model needs to be saved and the shared view named.
Once the Share button is selected the model is processed and a lightweight file is published to the Cloud. Once complete a dialogue will provide an option to either view within a browser for checking, or copy a link which can be sent to a colleague for review.
The shared model has a default lifespan of 30 days which, if necessary, can be extended by the author. Alternatively, the file can be deleted should a newer file version become available, and the current view becomes obsolete.
Once the recipient receives the shared view link, they can open the file via a suitable browser like Google Chrome and view, slice and measure from the model. Provided they have logged in with their Autodesk Account they can also mark up with red-lining tools and text and save any comments which can be addressed by the model author.
Once made the designer can view any mark-up comments from their Desktop application of Revit and either resolve the issues as they are listed or reply for clarification as required.
The shared model will be available for 1 month, but should more time be required the duration can be extended. This can be set from the elipsis button in the Shared Views dialogue. Other options include show resolved issues, view in browser, copy link and delete file.
Any views shared from Revit will also show in other applications which share the same function, including Inventor and AutoCAD.
