I still get asked by users on the best or most efficient way to measure areas of elements within AutoCAD drawings. In my opinion I tend to use Hatch objects on dedicated layer(s) and then make use of fields and the useful area properties that hatch elements possess.
A few years ago, I wrote a series of blogs detailing the many ways that areas can be measured and recorded. Although the screenshots are for AutoCAD 2019, they are still valid for the current 2023 release. These options are also available for the AutoCAD LT platform as well!
In summary therefore, to measure an area simply select the hatch element(s) and check the area properties within the property’s palette. Hatches have area fields which will either display individual areas or a cumulative area total which can be easily sent to AutoCAD’s QuickCalc function to convert units of measurement. This information can be copied and pasted manually into text elements or linked to fields which will update the area values should the drawing be modified.
