Introduction
Training delegates often ask how to create bespoke components. Revit’s Model In-Place tool creates a stand-alone component that is unique to the current project.
Create an In-Place Element
In this example we will create a standard sloped concrete cap on top of a structural column.
Place a concrete column in the default Level 0 view: Height: Level 1, Length: 900mm Width 900mm.
On the ribbon, click (Model In-Place).

In an east elevation view, create a solid extrusion using a profile similar to the one shown in fig 2 below.
In a south elevation view, create a void extrusion (fig 3).
Set Work Plane
When drawing the profiles remember to set the work plane to the appropriate face of the column.
The column cap stone should look like the one shown in fig 4 below. Edit the solid extrusion and apply a material to it such as concrete cast in situ.
Use the Model In-Place options to create the gate pillars below.
