Family Geometry
When you have built the parametric framework, the next step in creating families is to add the actual geometry to the family file. These elements can be aligned and locked to reference planes and other geometry.
There are five basic geometric forms from which all Revit families are created: Extrusion, Blend, Revolve, Sweep and Swept Blend.
The Forms Panel
In the Family Editor, hover over the form icons to view a short video showing the functionality of each of the form tools.
Each method uses a sketched 2D profile as the basis of the 3D shape.
- Extrusion pushes the profile in one direction.
- Blend links two profiles together.
- Revolve rotates the profile around an axis.
- Sweep extends a profile along a path.
- Swept Blend connects two different profiles along a path.
Void forms use the same methods but must be placed inside solid forms to create a subtracted area.
Three illustrations of geometric forms are shown on the next page. Materials can be assigned to the solid forms.
