One of the most obvious ways to start a new file in AutoCAD is to access the “New” command from the displayed list of programme tools after selecting the “Capital A” at the top left of the application, as shown in Figure 1.
This method will locate the folder containing the “Templates” from which the required template can be selected as shown in Figure 2.
The default or location on install for template files for the current release is as follows: -
C:\Users\(UserName)\AppData\Local\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2022\R24.1\enu\Template
This is similar for all releases.
From the displayed list, select the required template, complete the function by selecting “Open”, a new drawing file is created based on the selected template file.
When the application is running with a file open, “New” drawing files can be created using the following options:
Right click on any existing file tab, located below the ribbon to display the menu then select “New” as shown in Figure 3.
This method again will display the “Template” folder, as shown in Figure 2 above, from which a template may be selected.
As a short cut, providing the previously selected template is going to be used again, left click on the tab to the right of the last open drawing tab, as shown in Figure 4.
This method will start a new file without the need to select a template file from the “Template” file list.
