In my previous blog here, I mentioned how you can transfer Fabrication parts to a Revit project. But what if you wanted to use an entire Fabrication configuration but didn’t have a Fabrication product installed?
With a working Fabrication configuration and some registry wizardry, this is actually possible.

This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to create a backup and restore it if a problem occurs (Microsoft Link), as this can render your system inoperable. You edit the registry at your own risk.
- Locate your chosen custom Fabrication configuration. The default location for Fabrication Content is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Fabrication 2019\
- Copy the whole named folder into a .zip file. Then transfer to the machine with just Revit. The custom “Test” configuration I used was around 80mb.
- On the machine with just Revit, go to the same folder and extract the zip file there.
- Finally create a new registry key and new string for the new path. The path should be Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Fabrication 2019\Configuration\
Now when you launch Revit you will see the new configuration from the drop down:
If you currently have a Fabrication configuration on a server, you can even point the path to the server location. It could be distributed to the users via a .reg file or similar.
This isn’t always the best solution for transferring data, as the configuration could be protected, or just extremely large, but having this as one possible option could help in certain situations.
