When working in a Revit project, whatever the discipline, there is usually a need to reference or overlay an external DWG, RVT or other type of file. To avoid accidental changes or moving of the reference, ensure that the file is pinned down, avoiding any problems.

Elements can be pinned by selecting the reference and using the Pin function to lock it into place. Pinned objects can also be set not to be selectable or highlighted when the cursor hovers over part of the reference. This is extremely beneficial when working with large CAD or Revit Model links.

The selection filters can be accessed either in the bottom right corner of the screen or the top left.

Several filters are available to the user. In addition to the pin method, there is also a global select links toggle, which can provide an extra layer of security to prevent accidental reference changes!

Ultimately it is best if users communicate effectively with other team members and follow the mentality ‘if in doubt ask’ and take some care when selecting elements in a view, reading any warning dialog boxes that may arise, and if appropriate discuss with a colleague and/or their BIM manager.
