How can I reduce the amount of space and information that the displays when it is expanded?

Turn off the display of any columns you aren’t using. Firstly, right-click a column heading and a list of column headings is displayed. A Tick indicates the on/off status. Secondly, clear the check or tick box to turn off the selected column display. Unfortunately, this selection process has to be repeated for each column you wish to turn off. A quicker alternative is to right-click the column headings and click Customize. You then simply Select or deselect each column on a dialogue box as required. Also, consider clicking the chevrons against layer filter on the layer dialogue, thereby temporarily collapsing the Filter Tree display to save space across the Layer dialogue.
