I recently posted on how named views can be used to aid productivity across all disciplines and help users quickly navigate between areas of drawings on busy or complex files.

Not only can they be useful when working in AutoCAD’s model space environment, but they can also be used to quickly place views on sheets!
As I mentioned in the previous post, the view extents, UCS, Annotation Scale and Layer State is all saved within the view making this a quicker way to setup drawing sheets than conventional methods like the ‘MVIEW’ command. To place the view onto a sheet, switch to a Paper Space layout and access the Layout Tab (which is unique to the paper space environment).
Not only is this process faster in setting up sheets, the placed named view is automatically locked to the defined scale, preventing accidental changes by inexperienced users!
There is an even more comprehensive tool which combines External Reference Attachment, placing views on Sheets with annotation notes. This function is called the AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager, and is in effect a simple project management tool, which allows users to specify project folders, project information and resource drawings.
Whilst the screenshots are from the current 2024 release of AutoCAD, these functions have been in the software for some years and are a common topic on Cadline’s AutoCAD training courses. Sheet Set Manager is quite a big subject, but I will cover its comprehensive functions in a future series of posts.
